British Semi-Longhair Cat Breed Info

British Semi-Longhair Cat Breed

The British Semi-Longhair cat is a semi-longhair version of British Shorthair . Apart from fur , it is identical to the British Shorthair. The British Longhair is also known as the Lowlander in the U.S. and the Britanica in Europe , but is not recognised in the UK as a separate breed.

British Semi-Longhair Cat Origin

The rationale for this breed is that the original longhaired British cat, through interbreeding with imported longhairs, was developed into the Persian and became increasingly massive and extreme in type and with longer, thicker fur than the early Persians. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, the Persian was considered the longhaired analogue of the British Shorthair.

During the latter part of the 20th century a shorthaired version of the modern Persian was developed and was called the Exotic Shorthair ; this was very different from the British Shorthair. It was therefore proposed that a longhaired cat of the British type be reintroduced into the cat fancy.

British Semi-Longhair Cat Appearence

Apart from its long fur, appearance of this pretty feline is not much different from that of the British Shorthair cat. Coat is lustrous and physique is stout in general. Head is round, with bright circular eyes and short ears. Legs are short too, but strong. Tail is plush and thick. Chest is deep, giving the overall impression of a compact, medium sized cat.

The British Semi-Longhair Temperament

The lovely British Semi-Longhairs are not only good in looks, but also in behavior. These cats are quite calm and easy going. They are also very fun loving and playful, particularly as kittens. Attaching quickly to their owners, the felines soon develop an affectionate and enduring relationship with humans. British Semi-Longhairs are wonderful cats for people who work as they are very happy just to laze around the house while you are out. They don't get destructive or need other animals for company. They do enjoy having another British Semi-Longhair or a cat with a similar temperament around though.
